Character Name: Odin Frey

Series: Original

Background: Okay here's a bare bones outline of Odin's homeworld and his personal background.

About 100 years prior to Odin's birth, the world was a thriving place. Great civilizations were popping up and technology was growing by leaps and bounds. People were generally happy and healthy. However, behind the scenes, a war was waging. The Ahura and the Angra had been fighting for centuries for control of the world's fate. In very general terms, the Ahura are considered "good", as their plans for the future involved a paradise-like place for people to live in, and enjoy prosperity. While the Angra are considered "bad", because they wanted nothing but chaos for the sake of chaos.

After a fierce battle, the war was over and the Ahura had lost. Struck from the heavenly home, the Ahura enacted their plan b. They sealed their powers - pieces of themselves - in the humans. And soon after this, the apocalypse happened. Great giant beasts rose from the sea and destroyed the great civilizations before they'd even realized what happened. When the dust settled, only a handful of people remained and the Angra began reshaping the world in their image.

Tiny settlements began showing up all across the globe, inhabited by pockets of survivors.

And the attacks did not stop. Once settlements were discovered, the creatures (unofficially dubbed the maiyu) would return. And then one day, a lone human single-handedly fought off a maiyu, calling on some unnatural force to beat the monster back. The person was hailed a hero, though he died from the exhaustion. Soon, more and more people were able to call upon these strange abilities to fight back against the maiyu. And when one fell in battle, their powers would find a new host.

This brings us to our dear old Odin Frey. He was born in a hobbled together shanty town in what could be considered coastal (close enough, anyway. They relied pretty heavily on fish for food). He was born during a baby boom during a lull in maiyu attacks, when the people foolishly believed that they were finally free. But they weren't.

When Odin was 8 years old, a maiyu attacked and devastated the shanty town. This was his first encounter with a maiyu and though he survived, his family did not. He was among the many orphaned children who were scattered across the country. He arrived in a rickety old jeep in another shanty village far away from where he'd been born. This is where he spent the rest of his childhood and most of his teenage years.

At 17, he discovered he was a "spear of the gods" or an asger. His power was that of electricity manipulation. There was no formal training for him, save for what little time he'd managed to practice on his own. The people in his town weren't exactly thrilled with the latest development in one of their own. Over the years, public opinion had begun to change about these "god-spears." Once hailed heroes, they were now under a constant cloud of suspicion after a popular superstition began to circulate, claiming the asger were responsible for the maiyu attacks. Why? Because the maiyu were attracted to things like themselves. Like calling to like. So Odin was basically asked to leave and so he did.

And he spent most of his life learning to survive on his own. When he was about 21 years old, he'd encountered three other asger, named Warshaw, Jami, and Q. They'd also been cast out of their homes because of who they were. They formed a band and basically traveled from place to place, defending the people from maiyu attacks whenever they could. It was during this time that Odin and his friends discovered that their powers were stronger (and much more manageable) in pairs. Soon, they'd all began pairing off, Jami with Q and Odin with Warshaw, developing bonds and becoming even more effective in fighting off the maiyu and finally turning public opinion back in their favor.

That is until disaster struck because none of my characters are ever allowed to be happy. Because of a stupid argument, a ripple in the bond he'd created with his partner, she was killed and Odin suffered some serious injury himself. Once he'd recovered, he left Jami and Q and spent the rest of the time wandering until he ended up on the Tide.

Personality:

Odin is a loner and loners like to be alone (x). That isn't to say Odin doesn't like people. He's got no problem socializing with them, but he's suffered a great deal of loss in his life, thanks to the maiyu and to his own stupid mistakes. So he prefers his own company, just to avoid the messy situations developing meaningful relationships bring. And while not particularly unfriendly, Odin doesn't go out of his way to make friends either. He thinks his business is his own and tries his best not to meddle.

Though that gives him a rather complicated relationship with his powers. Packaged with them comes an innate need to help, even at the expense of himself. It is, unfortunately, part and parcel to carry a piece of a god inside of him. So while he often claims not wanting to get involved, he'll often inexplicably become involved anyway, just because of what he is.

With people, Odin is very gruff and a little too frank. He prefers honesty, nothing sugar coated or said to spare his feelings (because he's certainly not going to spare yours). And that is definitely part of the reason he prefers to keep to himself.

Odin doesn't view himself through any kind of rose-colored glasses. He doesn't think he's going to save the world or that he's even capable of stopping the maiyu. The loss of his partner is an especially painful memory for him and he feels very guilty about her death and it has basically crippled him on an emotional level. Bonds developed between asger are nigh unbreakable and once they're severed, it's like losing something vital. And it absolutely did not help that he was kind of in love with Warshaw. It is because of her ghost that he is definitely unable to move on with his life.

Appearance: PB is Paraskevas Boubourakas

Abilities: In Odin's homeworld, people with powers are called asger which roughly translate to spear of god. What that basically means is that he has in him a piece of one of the Anhura and it grants him certain abilities. Namely electrokinesis. He is a living conductor, can create, absorb, generate, increase electricity. Though it should be noted he is basically useless when he's wet and if he's using his powers when he gets wet, it could very well short him out and kill him. He can be "overloaded" and will release any excess currents in short bursts that can make the lights flicker.

While on the boat, his powers are limited to absorption and generation. Meaning he'll only be able to absorb currents and generate them using a conductor, like a piece of metal. This will tire him out greatly and will make him pass out if he's using it for too long.

Items: Clothes, a pack of cigarettes, and a lighter

Preferred Quarters: None

Third Person Sample:

Warshaw's favorite color was blue. She'd worn it nearly everyday as a t-shirt or on her socks or in her hair. She said it reminded her of the ocean. Y'know, if it wasn't a harbinger of death and destruction. And she'd laughed while he'd just shook his head at her.

She died wearing her favorite color too, when he held her against his chest. She had blue ribbons in her hair, slick with blood and grime and she'd smiled weakly at him and had tugged at his beard before she closed her eyes and breathed her last.

Now he can't see the color blue without seeing her. So when he sees it, that blue sundress, homespun and worn, but airy and light, he had to follow it. It was silly of him to think it might be her. Warshaw was dead. She'd been a limp, bloody shell in his arms. Her powers had been passed on to someone else. She wasn't coming back.

Still, his feet carried him through the shanty town, into the market, down the muddy streets until the woman in blue turned a corner and Odin could not catch her. He hadn't thought of what he would say to her if he had caught her. Just stare at her stupidly while she asked him if he was crazy. Yeah. He was.

Faintly in the distance, a bird was singing. A blue bird and Odin didn't smile. He was a fool. And fools did not deserve good things.

First Person Sample:

[The audio feed catches the sound of waves and it is clear he is on the top deck.]

There is a reason no one travels by boat. If the maiyu attacks us out here, don't ask me to help. I'm not helping.

[And that's final.]
